The Living First Language Platform

“Indigenous people have the right to revitalise, use, develop and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures.” - Article 13 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

It’s a global, cross-generational problem.

221 million children around the world lack access to education in their native tongue, resulting in early stage learning difficulties with irreversible, lifelong results.

We’re losing more than words.

Inadequate early childhood language development disconnects identity, and exacerbates inequality. Its social impact stifles cultures, hitting communities hard and placing a low ceiling on their potential for economic growth.

Existing solutions aren’t enough.

To embed a resource successfully in a community, it must be co-created with them. The majority of resources available at present haven’t been developed this way, and are either culturally irrelevant or inaccessible.

Who we are

The Living First Language Platform is an initiative by The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF). With over 20 years experience, ALNF have developed multiple award-winning literacy programs supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, refugee and marginalised communities across Australia.

Dedicated to raising language and literacy standards, ALNF’s programs are targeted, specialised and community driven. ALNF believes that literacy is freedom- literacy allows individuals to access education, participate meaningfully in our society and to have a voice. It is a basic human right.

For the community, by the community

For the community,

by the community

Language is something that communities own and self-manage, so we’ve designed the LFLP to operate in the same way.

This app is a field-tested tool that essentially transforms language input by any member of a community into a meaningful resource for both teaching and learning.

Once created, these language assets can be harnessed to create new and unique offerings that benefit the community.
